Vitra is a German brand specializing in the production of designer furniture. Founded in 1950 in Weil am Rhein, near Basel, it was started as a family business by Willi Fehlbaum, already a furniture factory owner, and his wife Erika. The discovery of the work of Charles and Ray Eames during a trip to the United States paved the way for the brand's successful parabola, which became a benchmark for modern design. By acquiring the rights to the Herman Miller collection, Mr. and Mrs. Fehlbaum put Charles and Ray Eames' signature pieces into production, and Vitra became the only brand authorized to produce and market furniture created by the American designers in Europe and the Middle East. In 1957, the company launched its first design made entirely in the Weil am Rhein factory: the celebrated Panton Chair designed by Verner Panton, a technical marvel that still amazes today. In 1981 a fire destroyed much of the production site, but the brothers Rolf and Raymond Fehlbaum, who succeeded at the helm of the company, seized the opportunity to combine design with avant-garde architecture and to define Vitra's new identity as a pioneer and benchmark in both fields. Based on Nicholas Grimshaw's design, the Vitra Factory Campus took shape, including the factories, the Vitra Design Museum, designed by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid's fire station, locations for events and temporary installations, Tadao Ando's conference pavilion, VitraHaus, and Herzog & de Meuron's Schaudepot. Even today, the Vitra Campus is a space in constant flux and is visited by architecture and design enthusiasts from all over the world, thanks to the permanent exhibitions and events organized annually.
